Chirang district's annual Bwisagu festival opened this week with traditional Bodo dance performances. Around twenty troupes from different parts of the district took the main stage on the opening day in traditional attire, drawing an enthusiastic crowd.

A member of the festival committee said participation from younger performers has grown encouragingly this year. "In earlier years it was mostly older performers on stage. This time a lot of the younger generation has stepped forward, which is a good sign for the future of our culture," the committee member said.

The accompanying fair features traditional bamboo craft, Bodo woven textiles and local food stalls. "Most of our stock sells out during these few days — it's the busiest time of our year," one vendor said.

A separate cultural competition has been organised for students, with entries in singing, dance and painting drawing participants from several schools. Winners will be announced on the festival's final day.

The festival runs for three more days and will close with a large cultural evening, organisers said. The district administration has provided security and logistical support for the event.
