A week-long craft exhibition in the state capital has drawn renewed attention to Assam's traditional weaving traditions, with eri, muga and handloom cotton textiles from several districts on display alongside live demonstrations.

Weavers from rural clusters were given stall space free of cost this year, an arrangement organisers say helped several first-time exhibitors connect directly with buyers rather than going through middlemen.

"Buyers often don't realise how much time goes into a single muga mekhela chador. Events like this let us explain the process and get a fairer price," said one weaver from a handloom cooperative.

The exhibition also featured a small section on natural dyeing techniques, drawing interest from design students and younger visitors. Organisers said footfall this year was noticeably higher than in previous editions.

A similar exhibition focused on bamboo and cane craft is being planned for later in the year, according to the state's handicrafts department.
