Tea Industry Body Projects Modest Growth This Season
Final numbers will hinge on rainfall patterns and labour availability on estates
The state's tea planters' association has forecast moderate growth in output this season, while cautioning that the final figures will depend on rainfall patterns and labour availability across estates.
A statement from the body said leaf collection in the early summer months was broadly on target, though a shortage of pluckers on some estates has weighed on volumes. Several smaller gardens are moving toward mechanised plucking to offset the gap.
Auction prices have held relatively steady, though exporters point to stiffer competition in international markets. A number of estates are pursuing organic certification in an effort to reach new buyers willing to pay a premium.
"We are cautiously optimistic," an official with the body said. "If rainfall stays consistent over the coming months, we should land close to our season forecast."
