Even as smartphone ownership climbs in rural districts, officials say confidence in using digital transactions safely has lagged well behind. A new training programme launched this month aims to close that gap, with camps planned across hundreds of villages in its first phase.

Trainers set up at village panchayat offices walk residents through online banking, UPI payments and government service portals in the local language, alongside sessions on recognising phishing calls and fraudulent messages.

One trainer said interest has been strongest among older residents and women. "Many told us this was the first time they checked their own pension or farm-subsidy status without asking someone else to do it for them," she said.

Organisers expect to reach more than a lakh people over the next six months. District administrations are also planning to extend the camps into local schools and health centres in the coming weeks.
